So we had our book club discussion this week for The Scarlet Letter. it was really interesting and it seemed like most people enjoyed this book on a different level from when they read it as high school (I know it seems obvious, but it wasn't my first thought when I picked the book up). We had a great discussion about whether or not we thought Hester Prynne thought what they had done was wrong, whether she was remorseful, whether they should have run away, and whether she or Dimmesdale actually had faith in their religion.
I have really enjoyed our last few meetings and appreciate that everyone is trying to read the books for book club and have a good literary discussion. The funny thing, we are usually finished by about 10pm, which is so different from before. We were usually there until 11pm or so, because we waited so long to talk about the book. There are good and bad points in this, I enjoy the social interaction I get when I go to book club (I usually don't see everyone until Friday at playgroup since I work throughout the week), but I am glad it has become more of a book club instead of a social get together. I'm sure it will continue to evolve over the next couple of months.
Our next book is War Letters. I can hardly wait.

My book club is also turning in a social event. Which I don't mind too much, but it's making it so (in my opinion) we are getting as great as books to read because people are just picking them to get it out of the way. My turn is in October, any ideas? I thought about Here Be Dragons but I think it might be too much reading. We are reading "Night" now which I've heard is good. Anyways I'm sending in my passport info in tomorrow.

I haven't read this book since high school. We were reading it when I broke up with my boyfriend for another guy and my friends made a huge red A and taped it to my back without me knowing. I wore it almost the whole day without anyone telling me. It makes the story very memorable to me.
Glad to see you finished your book. Are you out of your book funk? Sounds like it sense you are moving on to another--good for you!!
I love that book. I read it in high school and I've seen the movie, but it's one that has really stuck with me. I think the ideas about religion, marriage, and judging others are still relevant today. We still do the same thing to people, just not as literal as making them wear an "A" on their shirt. Very interesting.
I'm like Elisa and Jill, I haven't read that book since high school either. It would be fun to read it now and see how my opinions have changed. I'm so glad your book club is evolving for the better. I remember just a couple months ago you were a little frustrated with it. Are you all set up internet-wise at your home now?
Amy- NO. ahh- I cannot wait for DSL. I am so annoyed without it.
I haven't read this since high school either, and I don't remember much. I will have to put it back on my list and read it again.
