Thoughts?

Have you read "The Kite Runner"? If yes, have any of you heard about this? I'm a little traumatized by the notion that we will just move the kids out of the country to protect their safety. Hello. Why didn't anyone think about these issues prior to the filming of the movie?

I loved this book. I was totally horrified, sickened, angry, sad, mesmerized by this beautiful story about love, redemption, forgiveness and really the whole point of the atonement. It created some controversy in our book club when we read it, because of its graphic nature but in the end it was a great book to discuss (at least that is what I heard, because I missed the actual discussion).

I guess my biggest issue is-- don't these producers have a moral obligation to protect their child actors? I realize they are moving them out of the country for an unspecified amount of time in the hopes that they will be protected and out of harms way, but seriously.. moving kids from the only place they call home sounds a little ridiculous. Hey- I got an idea.. why don't your just not release the movie? Sure it will cost you $18 million dollars, but don't you think you would be saving a lot more in the long run? I'm sure they have done their research, but come on. I can honestly say that I would have seen the movie, but now there is no way I could support something that is producing such a negative aftermath. Especially since it seems like the producers are taking the same old American approach of not understanding or learning the culture of other nations and missing the point entirely. Sorry- a bit off topic, but it annoys that there are many instances of Americans responding reactively instead of proactively. I guess this is another case in point.

I had similar feelings about the book and was very saddened when I heard about all the controversy surrounding the movie. It really sounds like the studio didn't know what they were getting into and is backpedaling fast. Those poor actors and their families! I've been following the story on NPR. And you know the worst part? The early reviews about the movie are not even very good. What a waste.

I agree. I would think they would have considered the kids safety before filming, but why didn't the kids PARENTS consider their safety when the movie was released? Its their responsibility way more than the studio, in my opinion..

"Have you read 'The Kite Runner'?"

I was going to, but then the person who promised me that she'd send me the book didn't send me the book.
