On Sunday we had a small (20 people + kids) party for a couple of friends in our ward that had birthdays at the beginning of July. I have tried to carry on the tradition of the fabulous Ruth Mitchell (Mindy- this is Ruth F. from your neighborhood) and have the birthday person's favorite cake/dessert at the party. So- I talked to the husbands of the two birthday girls and found out that Carrie likes Devil's Food cake and Kathryn hates cakes all together and prefers pie. Okay- so I can easily make Carrie's cake, but a pie.. I've never made a pie before. Needless to say I was a little nervous, but thank heavens our DSL is up, because I ran to the computer and headed to the guru of entertaining...Martha. She had a great
Apple Pie recipe that
seemed fairly straight forward. The surprising part (you never know what you will get with a Martha recipe) it was so easy. Thanks to my trusty sidekick Kaycee we put the finishing touches on the pie just before dinner and look at how beautiful it turned out (sorry- our kitchen is really dark). The chocolate cake (I should have taken a picture) was also divine. In the end it was a great party and everyone loved the desserts. Although- next time I think we need 2 pies.

Oh- a side note- our apartment is a GREAT party place. It is big enough to house people and with two couches there was ample seating areas.

I wouldn't consider 20 to be a small party! Congratulations on your first pie. It's gorgeous -- and huge!
What a huge accomplishment--congrats on the yummy pie. And it looks so tasty. Its also nice to see your smiling face--you never post pictures of you and your tasks!!
M.. I know- it was a little misleading to say small. It was meant to be small, but hey the more the merrier and it really wasn't too bad in the new digs.
J- I hate myself in pictures. I usually refuse, but I was highly impressed with this little accomplishment. When Lulu looks through her scrapbook she is going to wonder what her mom looked like. ha-ha.
Lara-
You call me creative, I suck compared to you. You are wonderful. I can't believe you baked a pie, way to go.
And you always look wonderful in pictures. But, I know the feeling, they are going to think they did not have a mother
I just want to know what you did with the Lara we all know and love...I know this isn't her... what alien has taken over-must be one that was in Betty Crocker first! Please give us our Lara back we can't live without the original--wait, that looks like the pies Sam Club sells...mmmm
Hello anonymous- no really.. I made the baby with my own two hands. On top of it, I made the crust!
yah, whatever.. I have even wondered if it may be trick photography-but I still think SAM's
Wow, you made your first pie (which looks wonderful), hosted a party at your new place, and included a photo of yourself on your blog...woohoo!
Lara, you look fnatastic! It was fun to see your smiling face again. You guys are great party hosts. I remember when we first moved in we came with the Claytons to your place uptown for a little get together, there was no pie though. Very impressive, and tasty (I know, i've eaten Martha's pie before).
it is incredible.
the joy of blogging and saving the memory with film (or i should say digital technology)
That pie looks enormous! Delicious~
Great work!
ummm, hello HUGE pie! It looks great! I've never made one, but it seems dang hard. Good for you!
Your pie is beautiful. I can't believe it is your first one. It looks like you have been making pies forever. I think that you need to make us a pie when we come and visit.

Oh and a chocolate cake too. Yummy!
congrats on your beautiful pie! I bombed my first pie experience last thanksgiving, and unless I get a serious lesson in pie crust making, I will buy them for that holiday from now on. My sisterinlaws are all so good at making pies, but they've been trained by "the master"- my mother inlaw. I didn't know Ruth lived by you! How fun- and what a great tradition she has started. Thanks for sharing!
You must share that martha stewart recipe! i felt like i could smell that pie from the picture. looks like it was a HUGE success (pun intended!) ;-)
