Blogging

I keep saying I'm going to get better about blogging, but frankly- I'm having a hard time finding a balance in my everyday life and I'm also struggling for topics I'm truly interested in blogging about. Therefore I have been taking a long hiatus. I'm not sure why I cannot find topics, but I think part of it stems from a blog a friend posted months ago. She commented about the decline in blogs and specifically thought provoking and interesting blogs. She commented that it seems like the only blogs out there are moms talking about their kids. I'm actually fine with that, but it got me thinking about why I originally started blogging. Yes, partly to keep family and friends updated on our lives, but I found that I wanted to blog about topics that interest me and hopefully find women that would discuss these topics too. Luckily I immediately found a group of women that were up for the challenge, but then my blog slowly turned into "look at the cute things Lulu is doing" which is fine, but not my original intent. So after reading Michelle's most recent post I am going to give it another try. Sure there will be lots of photos of Lulu and I'm sure lots of photos of the newest addition (when he arrives at the end of September), but I also hope I can find that happy balance. My interests haven't changed..

I'm still fascinated by the ridiculous media coverage of Paris Hilton and her contemporaries (do any of these people actually have a grasp on reality and life),

why people still question the existence of global warming,

how I feel about voting for a candidate for president just because he shares my religious beliefs and whether I think that is surrendering everything I believe in (I equate it to voting straight ticket republican instead of learning about each candidate),

are diesel cars still gigantic smog producers or are they a better option than the current lot of regular unleaded cars out there,

AFRICA (did you see the amazing Vanity Fair for July?)

The Daily Show and how entertaining it has been recently- could John Stewart show anymore disdain for the current administration or Gonzales,

I need some new music, Does anyone have a great new band they have discovered?.

How can we make HIV medications more available to third world countries,

How can I finance a trip to Africa with my brother-in-law next year?,

My husband actually said visiting Africa is low on his priority list of places to visit.. I'm sorry.. WHAT? Am I the only one that is still shocked by things their spouse says or believes?,

Do I really think that I'm missing a bonding moment with my children because I don't breastfeed?,

You see.. yeah maybe they aren't all amazingly interesting topics, but these are the things I think about. I promise my next post will be about my cute smiling kid.

Sorry- no pictures. Also, just a little side note... after reading Jill's post listing the answers to her blogging questions I feel a little sheepish about not posting a picture. But, I'm trying not to givve into peer pressure so I'll explain why:

1. I don't like like my face so I rarely post pictures of myself
2. This is a perfect picture for me.. I'm a shopping freak, I LOVE purses, and I would have been in heaven living in the 1950's- without reading one of my posts you already have an idea of what kind of girl I am. C'mon I have an entire closet dedicated to my shoes. By the by, my shoes are in individual boxes with a picture of the shoes mounted to the outside of the clear plastic box so I can easily pick out shoes in the morning. I LOVE my profile picture. I'm keeping it.

I love this post Lara, this is you. You are an amazing mother, but most of all you are someone who is brillant and loving and continues to learn all the time. You are well balanced, and that balance will come, I am still searching for it after 6 years of being a stay at home mom. I love you and wish I was more educated in the things you are, and had your passion. I am trying.

Lara...I am constantly reevaluating the purpose of the existence of my blog. I must reclaim it for myself often. People will always tell you what they think a "blog" should be but that is bull crap (excuse my french). By nature, a blog is whatever you what it to be. So, kudos to you for reclaiming today and for sticking with your darling profile pic! I loved this and can't wait to join the discussion. I've missed it here.

I'm happy to discuss any and all topics you put forth! I'm terrible at discovering new music, that's why I'm listening to Pandora now, it's my attempt at broadening my repertoire. I still feel, after being married for 16 years, as if I may never understand my husband. And I watched an episode of the Daily Show last night that gave me some much-needed belly laughs!

(Seriously? All your shoes are in plastic boxes with pictures? Wow.)

Ok- you know how I feel about Africa and John Stewart (he is the one celebrity I would most like to lunch with).

I have the same issues with feeling like I don't want the blog to be a "today I did..." or "today Evie did..." and also wanting to share those things with people.

As for breastfeeding, I am not in love with it. I don't hate it, but I don't love it. Honestly, its amazing to me that our bodies can make food for our young, but I don't think its the make or break to bonding with our children. Formula isn't heroin for crying out loud, and you or dad still feed the baby...I do it mainly out of stubbornness that my body must do something "right" in the whole realm of women's health, and out of guilt.

We will go to Africa together someday. Dave doesn't want to go either.

Lars,

LOVED your blog today!

Lara you're back! It's great to hear an update...

Yes, I agree with the Paris Hilton coverage along with Brittney Spears and Lindsay Lohan. Crazy to think Lindsay's recent run-in happened in my neighborhood! I think it's even more crazy that here in LA it is front page news.

I've done it both ways - BF and not BF. Both ways worked for me. I do have to say that BF Lizzy was the only cuddle/bonding time I got with her. She is still my not-so-cuddly child so I'm glad to have got something from it.

I love hearing about your "to-do's" and "LuLu's"! Please keep posting! Love ya, Heidi

lara,
loved reading this today.
i have always said i am one day from never blogging again - but every day rediscover why I do, i love seeing how my blog goes up and down and all around - for me it doesn't have to be just one thing and but can be just one thing. that doesn't make much sense.
i have enjoyed seeing your comments again on michelle's and jill's posts.
i am one of those moms who loves breastfeeding, i don't know why but i did. it was dang hard for me, but it was like i enjoyed the challenge of making it work - kind of a wierd thing for me as I think i give up things when they get hard. I am that totally annoying mom who has no problem breastfeeing their child in public - i won't do a mom sit in at a mall, but never seemed to have a problem finding a spot to do it. yet i have always been pretty insecure about my body - how weird is that - but i have also learned and feel strongly that it is such personal thing and what works for some does not work for others.

some of my favorite new songs were ones that UK Amanda:) emailed me on my "can't feel myself running post" they are awesome and I bought almost every one on itunes.

like adam, I have don't have a desire to visit Africa, I don't know why, but maybe Jeff coming home with Maleria after doing a two week medical mission there may have something to do with it.
much of jeff's family have gone there and love it!
i also know i have a hard time seeing situations that are sad, especially ones I can't change, which has recently been my struggle in our ward we attend, it is really eating at me. I feel so quilty for having it so good and am frusterated with those feelings. it also numbs me to really get in there to do something.

so... i don't think i have written this long of a comment in a long time. i look forward to your future blogs and comments. hope you are feeling well growing that sweet baby.

"why people still question the existence of global warming"

Apparently, there's a "denial machine," according to Newsweek this week. (See here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20122975/site/newsweek/) The article is good, but spends a remarkably little amount of time actually telling us where the consensus comes from and when it was developed, which is silly, really, for an article about how the "denial machine" (a loaded term, I would think) is ignoring this consensus. You'd think it would at least start at where the consensus came from, who is at the center of it, what studies have been done, etc. But it doesn't. Maybe I just need to watch "An Irritating Truth."

"how I feel about voting for a candidate for president just because he shares my religious beliefs and whether I think that is surrendering everything I believe in (I equate it to voting straight ticket republican instead of learning about each candidate)"

If you don't like Romney's policies, don't vote for him. It's as simple as that. The more interesting question, I think, is what to do with people who won't vote for him because they don't share his religion, even though they probably share his political veiws.

"The Daily Show and how entertaining it has been recently- could John Stewart show anymore disdain for the current administration or Gonzales"

You know he does parodies of the news, not the actual news, right? The point of his show is primarily to make people laugh, not to offer substantive opinion.

"My husband actually said visiting Africa is low on his priority list of places to visit.. I'm sorry.. WHAT? Am I the only one that is still shocked by things their spouse says or believes?"

You'd better start listening to that man, or you're going to lose him. Maybe to me.

"Do I really think that I'm missing a bonding moment with my children because I don't breastfeed?"

Yes.

Two comments:

First, who was the genius who inspired your blog today? He or she must be a pretty insightful and fascinating person.

Second, I'm pretty sure this is the last kid I breastfeed. If it is suppose to be so natural and wonderful, why does it hurt like crazy?

Okay, three comments. I think you owe it to your faithful readers to update your blog more regulalry. Even if you have ordinary things to say, all of us enjoy hearing from you or we would stop reading.

Honestly I think you should blog about what ever makes you happy. For most of us our lives are our kids. For some it may be issues they want to discuss etc. For the record I miss seeing Lulu photos and red stains on the denim couch. But what do I know right?

I recently found a new band I like. It may make you cringe but Timbaland is one of my newest running favs. I have found a lot of new music from watching So You Think You Can Dance. Anyways, glad your back Lulu or not :) Pretty soon there will be another cute one in the mix to talk about.

I would love to read about all those things you mentioned, though I may have different views on a few I enjoy an opposing perspective as well!

Congratulations on your upcoming new Bundle of Joy!!

I think one of the beauties of blogging is that it's so personal. It can be anything you want it to be. I think the answers to those questions were generalized and in the context of a community of bloggers. Nobody reads all of the blogs and everyone picks and chooses the ones that appeal to them the most, but there are no rules. It's all good.

This list of of blog topics definitely seems more you, so welcome back! I don't know that I have anything fabulous to say about any of it, but here goes.

Why is Paris Hilton even in the media and who cares?

Global warming is real, it's freakin hot.

I'm clueless about politics (gasp).

I have no desire to go to Africa either. It's probably because I don't get to travel internationally very much (once in my whole life so far) so there are many other places that top Africa.

I like the Daily Show, but I don't watch it.

I'm way in to James Morrison's music right now and have listened to his cd about 1000 times this summer.

Breastfeeding is definitely a bonding experience, but so is having a baby and taking care of it for it's entire life!

I enjoyed reading about your profile picture, it does seem very you.

Lately I have been listening to Fall Out Boy, they are pretty cool. Check them out, and if you want some videos let me know and I will upload some for you to download.
Good luck with the blogging block.

I love your profile picture-- Keep it!

I really liked this post, and I think you expressed quite a few of my issues with blogging-- and the world in general. I would love posts on any of those topics.

I had a somewhat awkward conversation with my dad the other day about global warming. When I was growing up, I thought the word "environmentalist" was one of the worst insults you could call someone--that's the kind of right-wing guy my dad is. He actually has good reasons for that opinion (he lumps environmentalists with PETA, who burned down his wholesale food business because he sells eggs), but now that I've developed my own opinions, I don't always agree with him. Anyhow, he was `quoting all this stuff about how global warming is a hoax. I don't want to argue about the science, but EVEN IF it is a hoax, I believe in the actions that "the global warming machine" promotes. I'm all for taking care of the earth, driving less, reducing, reusing, recycling. I can't believe those things are wrong. Anyhow, I read an excellent book last year that I highly recommend: "The Consumer's Guide to Effective Environmental Choices" by the Union of Concerned Scientists. The authors sort through all the environmental stuff you hear and tell you what you can actually feasibly do to help and which things you can stop feeling guilty about.
