So- I finished my book The Other Boleyn Girl. Interesting. It is basically the story of Mary Boleyn- the sister of Anne Boleyn and her experience in the court of Henry VIII. Prior to Anne, she was his mistress and bore two of his children. It deals with how the family tried to advance by playing these two sisters towards the king, as if they were interchangeable. The thing I thought was interesting was the playing out of sibling rivalry, specifically the rivalry between sisters.

This book really made me reflect on my own family. With no boys in our family and 5 sisters, there was a ridiculous amount of rivalry in our house. We all love one another, and it seems to have eased over the years, but when we were growing up there were constant battles.. specifically in the clothing department. My father finally had to outlaw sharing clothes with one another. We always chalked it up as a girl thing, but after talking to several other people with either only sisters, or a large number of sisters, it seems more like sibling rivalry. I guess I just thought it was interesting that we never really thought of it that way. Thank heavens we all didn't grow up in the time period of Mary Boleyn-- talk about taking rivalry between sisters to a whole new level.

I loved this book too, and got completely sucked into that world (though I'm so glad I didn't have to live in that time period). It's interesting that you noticed the sibling rivalry in it, my sisters were younger enough from me that we didn't have to go through it much growing up (though it made me crazy when they wanted to borrow my stuff at all). Good luck with your next book.

So who would have survived in our house? My bets are on either you or Meg.
another book to add to my ever growing list of books to read.

this may have to get on my list having three girls here.
do you think it is a tough book to tackle? it almost sounds too smart for me.

I'm now apart of the cool group. So fun. Thanks Jill. I was really afraid of the Stephen Colbert comment.

I wonder if we should expose to Jill that we grew up with her sister in law Amy. We lived in the same neighborhood, went to the same school. So this whole blogging thing is just way to weird and how small of a world it really is.

That's pretty freaky that you know Amy--how small is this circle of blogs anyway? I fear some bizarre overlap that will bite me in the butt at some point. I love Amy though, so I guess I'm okay so far.

As for the Stephen Colbert comment, I think he's hilarious. I don't watch him often, but when I used to watch the Jon Stewart show a lot I loved him.

I am impressed you finished such a hard looking book. I have several books on my shelf I was suppose to read for our book group and never got around to it.
