4th of July Weekend

Flower Garden

Checking out the Yard

Grandma's Cute Shed

Hammock Ride

Lulu

We went for the 4th of July to see my Grandma in Nebraska. We had a great time and Lulu loved exploring her yard. They live in a really small town that has the most peaceful feeling to it. It reminds me of the little town from the movie Twister (only because the whole time we were there I could hear the wind chimes and kept thinking.. any minute...). Kidding. It does have the small town charm though. My Aunt and Uncle also live there. In fact their backyard and my grandma's side yard are actually connected.

For the last two years we have driven up for the 4th of July, partly because of the built in holiday, but also because this tiny town (of just over 100 people) has the most spectacular firework display. Some guy that lives there has experience doing firework shows, so every year he puts on a little show at the town ballfield. I should not really say little, because it usually goes on for about 1-1 1/2 hours (I'm not being dramatic either). In addition to this really nice guy, is a really nice lady that donates money for them to put the show on every year. It is shocking, because I am sure this thing costs a small fortune. We took lawn chairs up to the ballfield and enjoyed the show (I forgot to take my camera- drat). We can munch on popcorn (they have a concession stand that they open for the firework show) , wave to all the neighbors, and add all the oooohhh and ahhhhs we can.

We also spent a little time outdoors this weekend. Lulu and I spent some quiet time enjoying the hammock. It was so nice. No big city noises, no where to be, just the sound of wind chimes and a cool breeze. I always joke about how small this town is, but everytime I go there I realize just how much I really love it (I don't want to live there, but love visiting). We explored the backyard and frontyard, helped lay some mulch, and enjoyed watching fireflies.

The other thing, several of my family members have the biggest green thumbs ever. My great grandfather used to do all this plant crossing and always had a wonderful garden. His daughter is the same way. My grandma has this really amazing little crazy garden. I say crazy, because it looks like no work at all (although I know how much work it is). She has combined all these great flowers together to get a really ecclectic flower garden. The crazy thing- she has two others on the side of her yard. I cannot believe she can keep up with all these plants. The flower beds are all well maintained and she changes out the flowers when they need it. Why couldn't I have inherited this amazing trait? I kill everything.

All in all, it was a great trip. I love that my extended family gets to see this crazy daughter of mine, and we get some time away from the big city and all the craziness of our lives.

I love that photo of Lulu in the hammock. I wish I had a hammock. It sounds like you had a great visit. I wouldn't want to live in a tiny small town, either, but they are fun to visit. I am so envious of that flower garden! Wow.

Those gardens look amazing. I too wish that I had a green thumb. Doug's dad has one and we keep telling him when we move back to AZ we are hiring him as our landscaper/gardner!

Glad to see you had a fun visit to NE and cute pictures.

Hey we hung out in the hammock at the Uncles house on the fourth. This family and hammocks. Okay, now I have to go for the fourth of July, although I don't know if I could stand the heat. It reminds me of mayberry, everyone knows each other, there is a great place to fish, and the family is one in a million. I gotta get there.

The older I get, the more appealing quiet, small spacey towns sound...hmmm.

I love the pictures - so cute! We also have the small town get away. I am thankful for it in our lives but glad we don't have to live there.

How lucky that you have a small town connection so that you can get away and experience the peace that comes from that kind of living. I love the thought of being able to relax in a hammock and only hear wind chimes and birds. What a cool way to spend the 4th.

I am friend of Angie and Jenny's. My husband was a resident with them in San Antonio. We now have moved back to Kearney, Nebraska, where we grew up. Where were the fireworks? They sound great. I'm glad you enjoyed NE. You described perfectly some of the many reasons why we moved back. At times we miss the conveniences of a big city, but the people, the quiet, and the sense of community and belonging make it well worth it. I hope you travel back here again.
