A Slight Detour...

Adam and I decided to go and see my Grandma and my Aunt and Uncle in Nebraska for the 4th of July. We left early Saturday and drove until we reached Oklahoma City. I thought since we were in the vicinity we should stop by the Oklahoma City Memorial (I watched Elizabethtown a couple of months ago and this is what reminded me about the memorial). We have driven through Oklahoma City several times on our way to Nebraska, but have never stopped. I am so glad we did.

The memorial is really quite beautiful. We were able to enjoy some time walking around and looking at the different components of the memorial. On either side of the reflecting pool is an archway with the time 9:01 and 9:03. The times signify life before the bombing and life after the bombing (the bomb went off at 9:02) . There are 168 chairs to represent the lives lost. A nice little children's area with tiles and flowers. Almost like a park. There is also the Survivor Tree (I tried to find pictures of it after the bombing, because I have an image of a fairly charred tree, but couldn't find what I was looking for). The orchard is surrounding the Survivor Tree. It represents all the people that came to help. However, the trees nearest to the Survivor Tree are native to Oklahoma to represent the first Oklahomans that were on the scene. In my opinion, it is one of the nicest memorials I have seen.

Overall it was a great little detour from our trip, and I am so glad we decided to stop. I wish we would have done it ages ago.
